The South African Navy on Friday officially opened its submarine escape training simulator at the west dockyard naval base in Simons Town.

The facility will be used to teach submariners useful escape methods.

Deputy Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thabang Makwetla said this submarine escape facility will ensure that submariners escape safely while at sea.

Makwetla said without the escape simulator, the navy would have to make use of similar facilities abroad, which would have major cost implications.

He added the simulator would eventually contribute Cape Town's economy as foreign submariners will come to the city for training.
