English Premiership Rugby Champions Saracens on Wednesday confirmed to Eyewitness News Sport that the first ever Heineken Cup rugby game to be played outside of the continent would take place in January in Cape Town.

Speaking ahead of a midday announcement, the club's Chief Executive Officer Edward Griffiths said that negotiations had even reached International Rugby Board (IRB) level, for the Pool match against French giants Biarritz to go ahead.

"The proposal required approval from the European Rugby Cup (ERC) and was even discussed at IRB level last week in New Zealand at the World Cup. It's seen as a fairly significant move in world rugby as it opens up Europe's premier competition to a South African audience," Griffiths told CapeTalk 567's Aden Thomas.

The match will take place on 14 January 2012 with the venue yet to be decided.

Either the Cape Town Stadium or Newlands will host the match.
