Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini on Monday said the government want to strengthen families to help cure many of South Africa's social ills.

Cabinet released a set of proposals aimed at bringing back traditional family values.

Dlamini said under Apartheid, many families were split for long periods of time and often only one parent would raise a couple's children.

She added that the breakdown of the traditional family structure has had many serious consequences for families.

The minister said substance abuse and pregnancies in schools are creating more problems for the government.
