Andries Bekker has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup after it was decided he needs to undergo ankle surgery, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) announced on Friday.
The lock was among the injured players who missed selection for the Tri-Nations touring squad.
Saru said following further evaluation it was decided that Bekker required surgery.
"We have sought a number of expert opinions over the past two weeks and the decision was taken that Andries required surgery now to safeguard his long-term rugby career," said Springbok team doctor, Dr Craig Roberts.
He said Bekker ruptured an ankle tendon during the Super Rugby season.
The 27-year-old will undergo surgery in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Johann Muller who was ruled out of the Tri-Nations tour because of a hamstring strain, will return to South Africa on Sunday.
The Boks face the Wallabies in Sydney at midday on Saturday without a recognised lock on the bench.
