Riot police have been deployed across <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">Malawi</country-region>'s cities, while shops have closed their doors in fear of more flare-ups following Wednesday's violent protests.

At least one person was shot dead when police broke up nationwide demonstrations against President Bingu wa Mutharika, who is accused of mismanaging the economy and trampling democratic freedoms.

Workers headed home early on Thursday as protesters moved through <place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Lilongwe's old town, looting stores.
