French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde has been elected the next leader of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday.

United States Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner announced his support for her candidacy, just hours before the board selected her as its managing director.

Lagarde is the first woman to head the organisation.

She is replacing Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who resigned in May after he was charged with sexually assaulting a New York City hotel worker.
