Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Monday said he would sooner go to jail than pull out of the coalition government.

He was reacting to the arrest of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) cabinet minister Jameson Timba who, like Tsvangirai, was accused of calling President Robert Mugabe a liar.

The prime minister said some Zanu-PF members also want him arrested.

Tsvangirai told his supporters in Bulawayo that officials in Mugabe's party are trying to force the collapse of the coalition government.

However, the MDC leader said he would not be intimidated.

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said they still intend to charge Timba even though a judge ruled that his detention was illegal.
