A Graaff-Reinet community organisation on Friday said that not the entire community is against fracking in the Karoo.

The Graaff-Reinet Shale-Gas Community Forum says it supports a Shell application to do hydraulic fracturing in the Pristine Karoo.

This is despite opposition from environmental groups and other Karoo organisations that say it will have negative environmental consequences.

The forum's Vuyiswa Jantjies said unemployed community members need jobs.

"We need to be looking at the economic potential that this mining activity is bringing to an area like the Karoo," he said. "What are the employment opportunities that are coming with it."
