The South African Rugby Union (Saru) announced a preliminary Springbok squad of 49 players for the Rugby World Cup on Monday.

World Cup-winning captain John Smit and vice-captain Victor Matfield are joined by 19 other members of the team who lifted the trophy in 2007.

Coach Peter de Villers said, "I'm very happy with the squad. We have got a good blend of youth and experience as well as including some uncapped players who have forced their way into contention for selection with their performances in Super Rugby."

He added that the Tri-Nations squad will be drawn from this group once it has been established which players are fit to play at the end of the Super Rugby competition.

Newcomers to the 2011 Springbok squad include Bulls loosehead prop Dean Greyling and the Ulster duo of Johann Muller (lock) and BJ Botha (tighthead prop).

The squad includes six uncapped players and four whom are based with European clubs.

The squad for the Tri-Nations will be named on July 2 or 9, depending on South African involvement in the Super Rugby final, and the final Rugby World Cup squad of 30 will be named on August 23.
