Fatah, the organisation governing part of the Palestinian territories, on Tuesday said South Africa must vote in favour of recognising Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September.

But, the Israeli government said South Africa should vote against the move saying peace cannot be dictated by outsiders.

Fatah's Hiyam Mater did not hesitate when asked how South Africa should vote. "South Africa and all peace loving nations should vote for a Palestinian state. An independent Palestinian state at least on the West Bank and the Gaza strip including Jerusalem as capital," said Mater.

He said it is an important vote for Palestinians even if it does not really change the conditions.
