The Israeli government on Monday said South Africa should vote against the formation of a Palestinian state when the issue comes before the United Nations. The UN General Assembly is due to hold a vote on whether the state should be formally created in September.

Israeli government spokesperson Mark Regev said no country should vote in favour of the formation of a Palestinian state. "Things cannot be dictated by any outside party. The only way to achieve peace is through negotiations," said Regev.

Israel's main opposition party Kadima said it wants to see proper negotiations between the two sides before Septembers vote.
