The International Relations Department on Tuesday said Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi has promised to prioritise the recovery of photographer Anton Hammerl's remains. Hammerl was shot by Libyan forces in April but his death was only confirmed in May, after weeks of denials from authorities in that country.

President Jacob Zuma held talks with Gaddafi in Tripoli on Monday. Zuma took the opportunity of his meeting with the Libyan leader to raise South Africa's concerns about the killing of Hammerl, and the fact that Libyan officials lied afterwards assuring their South African counterparts that they were holding Hammerl who was alive and well.

Zuma said he understood how painful it must have been for the Hammerl family and he undertook to do everything possible on his peace mission to Libya to press for the return of the photographer's remains for burial in South Africa.
