Human polar bear, renowned environmentalist and motivational speaker, Lewis Pugh, has come out in support of a campaign against mining in the Karoo.

Shell wants to mine for shale gas in the region using a controversial method of hydraulic fracturing or ’fracking’.

However, many communities across the Karoo and further afield are opposed to thee oil giant’s plans.

Pugh threatened to take the matter to court.

“We’ll take this fight from the petrol pump to the highest court in the land if we have to,” he said.

The Treasure the Karoo Action Group handed over its submission opposing Shell’s mining exploration at Parliament on Tuesday.

Pugh said he is confident government will make have the sense not to approve it.

However, lawyer Luke Havemann said should Shell be successful, he is ready to take the matter to the courts as soon as possible.

He said the company’s draft environmental management report is grossly inadequate, illegal and unconstitutional.
