The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) on Friday distanced itself from comments by its Gauteng chairperson, who labelled MEC Barbara Creecy a Satanist and told union members not to be friends with white people.

Moss Senye was addressing around 1,000 teachers at a mass meeting in Soweto on Thursday.

He called Creecy Satanic for implementing a "no work, no pay" policy for teachers after last year’s public servants strike.

Sadtu’s Nomusa Cembi said Senye’s comments do not reflect the union’s position.

“Sadtu is a nonracial organisation and we do not advocate issues that promote racism,” said Cembi.

Creecy’s office said it will not abandon the "no work, no pay" policy.

Meanwhile, Senye is due back in court on Monday over allegations he assaulted a pupil at Meadowlands High School where he is the principal.
