Richemont SA Chairperson Johann Rupert has called for more studies to be conducted before the search for gas in the Karoo gets underway.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC secured a permit to explore for shale gas over 185,000 square kilometres in the Karoo in 2010.

However, concerns have been raised about the water system in the area being polluted.

“The poor cannot afford to drink bottled water and where will the people get water from in the future if it gets polluted?"

He added, "We are not against drilling; in fact fracking, if done in the right environment with proper studies, can help alleviate the shortage of energy."
