The Hawks’ Precious Metals Unit began its investigation in 2008 as part of Operation Cauldron, which aimed to crack down on illegal miners and the criminals they sell their hauls to.

Spokesperson McIntosh Polela said one of the specialised unit’s own members was among those arrested.

“Allegedly he stole the precious metal that was seized by us and kept as exhibits and sold it back to the syndicates,” he said.
