The mother of a man whose car was swept away by the floods in Centurion has defended her son.

There were various allegations that Nick Stolp was reckless when he tried to cross a flooded bridge.

Stolp escaped from his car before it was washed away and grabbed onto a tree next to the river. He said he saw other victims floating by while trapped in the tree.

His mother Irma said her son knew the bridge very well and that he should not be charged with reckless driving.

“He saw there was a lot of water and he decided he can make it,” she said.
