The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday denied that rape charges against two <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Johannesburg schoolboys were dropped because police did not do their jobs properly.

The boys were arrested on Monday after allegedly gang-raping a fellow pupil at the <place w:st="on"><placename w:st="on">Jules<placetype w:st="on">High School in Jeppe, last week.

The incident was watched and recorded by other schoolmates.

The suspects appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday but the case was struck from the roll because there was not enough evidence against them. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

“We have requested the police to conduct further investigations and obtain more statements. Once that has been done we will re-look into the matter,” said the NPA’s Mthunzi Mhaga.
