Two Algerian football fans can now go home after they pleaded guilty to stealing during the World Cup.

The pair was arrested for the crime last month and within days the two were sentenced to 18 months in jail by a special World Cup court.

But last week the North Gauteng High Court found there was a miscarriage of justice and ordered the retrial.

Despite pleading guilty, Yagoubi Nabil and Azibe Salim said they did not commit the crime.

Their attorney Abdul Jaffer said they had two choices: plead guilty and go home; or contest the charge and experience just how slow the wheels of justice turn outside of the World Cup courts.

The pair agreed to a R6 000 fine each and received 18-month prison sentences suspended for five years.

They are expected to fly home on Thursday, finally ending their 2010 World Cup experience.
