Farmworkers’ union Sikhula Sonke claims African National Congress members in the region planned a march to the site on Tuesday.
The group said it was concerned the march could reignite a wave of xenophobic violence in the area. Last year locals forced foreigners out of their homes after claiming they were being offered job opportunities they should have received themselves.
Hundreds of immigrants, mostly Zimbabweans, have been living in the camp since the unrest.
The union’s Wendy Pekeur said ANC members told her about the march.
“We were there when these persons went around with a loud hailer. When an ANC member came to ask me why we want people to reintegrate, then he asked about housing, because they were told no houses will be built because there’s too many people there,” said Pekeur.
