Charl Scheepers and two other officers were responding to reports of a robbery in the area on Saturday night.

It was when Scheepers told the suspects to drop their weapons that he was shot in the stomach.

He died of his injuries in hospital a few hours later.

One person has been arrested in connection with the shooting while 10 others were taken in for questioning.

The police’s Lynette Erasmus said wearing a vest was part of police protocol.

“It’s a member’s discretion if he’s not wearing a bulletproof vest. The medical aid will only pay out for wearing the vest.”

His brother Eugene said he had lost his best friend.

“He was like an idol to me and I learned a lot from him. He was always there for me and I love him, what more can I say?”

Last month, Eyewitness News revealed bulletproof vests used by police officers did not protect officers from heavy caliber weapons including AK47s.
