The Independent Electoral Commission has ruled African National Congress heavyweight Winnie Madikizela-Mandela can stand as a candidate in this year’s polls.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The Democratic Alliance and the Freedom Front Plus objected to her inclusion on the ruling party’s national list for the elections because of her criminal record. But the IEC ruled on Monday that her inclusion is not against the country’s laws.

The DA’s James Selfe said the party had not yet seen the "full reasons for the IEC’s decision".

"When we receive them we will discuss those reasons with our legal team to see whether or not we should pursue this matter in the Electoral Court,” said Selfe.

Appeals against the IEC’s decisions on candidates must be lodged in the next three days.

The commission will finalise the process by the end of this month.
