The Save Zimbabwe Now Campaign has labelled the arrest and detention of Movement for Democratic Change heavyweight Roy Bennett as "scandalous".

Bennett was arrested last week as he was preparing to leave <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on">Harare for <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">South Africa</country-region>.

He was due to be sworn in as deputy Agriculture minister this week.

Bennett was expected to appear in court on weapons charges on Monday after treason charges against him were dropped.

The campaign’s Kumi Naidoo called on President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF to explain the MDC member’s detention.

“It is very interesting that we have had absolute silence from the part of the Zanu-PF, they have not offered a justification since the arrest I think that it’s pretty scandalous really,” said Naidoo.
