A Somerset West wine estate is counting the cost of a devastating fire that threatened the property.

The fire started in the <?xml:namespace prefix="u1"?><place u2:st="on"><placename u2:st="on"><?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><place w:st="on"><placename w:st="on">Helderberg<placetype u2:st="on"><placetype w:st="on">Mountains above the Lourensford Estate a week ago.

Lourensford Vineyard and Fruit Production Manager Barry Humby said they were concerned about the destruction the fire was causing.

Humby told Eyewitness News that most of the estate’s workers were re-deployed to keep the fire at bay.

He added that fruit would start rotting if they did not get down to picking soon.

“We’re normally harvesting fruit at this time of year. People who normally harvest, they’re actually out fighting fires, so it’s impacting on that area.”

More than a hundred fire fighters, with the help of a helicopter, have been fighting the fire since it started.
