Fire rages in Stellenbosch

The first test between the South African Women’s Hockey Team and <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Germany</country-region> was called off on Wednesday evening due to the fire that was raging through the mountains around Stellenbosch.

The fire which was driven by a gale force south easterly wind swept down the mountain side and has threatened the <place w:st="on"><placetype w:st="on">University of <placename w:st="on">Stellenbosch buildings including the Coetzenberg Sport Science Centre.

However, the Lanzerac Hotel in Jonkershoek has not been placed in danger.

Assistant General Manager <place w:st="on">Devon van Niekerk said: “We’ve had a massive veld fire raging from the Jonkershoek area and moving its way into Stellenbosch town alongside the hotel.” <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
