Biyekula Mbemba was arrested on Friday after he allegedly tried to flee the scene of an accident.

The case was postponed to Friday.

It is understood the suspected DRC rebel leader faces another charge of drunk driving for which he was released on bail.

Police said he failed to arrive for his last court appearance and will therefore remain in custody.

After Mbemba was taken into custody, he apparently told police that he was the leader of one of the rebel factions in the DRC.

Police seized documents that suggested he may be involved in diamond smuggling.
