Government’s long-awaited Mining Safety Audit Report was released on Monday.
It revealed that South African mines were on average only 66% compliant with safety regulations.
The audit was commissioned by former president Thabo Mbeki after a series of mining deaths and accidents.
The Mineral and Energy Department’s Bheki Khumalo said a lot must be done to ensure workers’ safety.
“The mining industry has looked at issues of training they have to look at issues of skills development they have to look at issues of design of the mines and general compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act."
