There will be a heavy police presence at the Tshwane University of Technology on Thursday morning.

Police officers opened fire with rubber bullets on Wednesday to disperse protesters who were apparently preventing students from registering at the institution.

The university’s Willa de Ruyter said that some staff members were wounded.

“It’s not clear what provoked the shooting. Three women were injured and a man was also injured,” said de Ruyter.

Staff members at the university have been on strike since Friday over salary increases.

Negotiations are still underway.

De Ruyter said that students who had not been able to register would have the opportunity to do so.
