Laudium residents have expressed concern about the discovery of an explosive device in a refuse truck in their neighbourhood.

Several roads in the area were cordoned off on Friday afternoon while homes in the vicinity of the vehicle were evacuated.

One resident said the explosive device found in the suburb worried him, "If it’s something like a bomb here then we’ve got big problems on our hands in this country. That’s a concern to the community."<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The unit which was detonated by the police’s bomb squad was discovered by garbage collectors on Friday while they were emptying refuse bins.

They immediately phoned the police who cordoned off the area around the refuse truck and evacuated houses as a precautionary measure.

When the explosives experts arrived on the scene they spent several hours trying to dismantle the unit before loading it into their vehicle and detonating it in a safe environment.
