KwaZulu Natal Transport MEC Bheki Cele denied reports that three people were being questioned on Friday, in connection with Mbongeleni Zondi’s death.

The MEC says while officials have identified the names of three suspects who may have information on the murder, no arrests have yet been made.

Zondi - who was a strong ally and friend of ANC President Jacob Zuma, as well as a direct descendent of King Bhambatha Zondi - died after being gunned down in a drive-by shooting earlier this week, in Umlazi south of Durban.

Among other things Zondi was known for bringing ANC support to his home town of <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Umsinga, which is traditionally an IFP stronghold.

His assassination has sent shockwaves throughout the province; dignitaries including Zuma and KZN Premier Sbu Ndebele visited the Zondi family, to offer their condolences.

The motive for the murder is still unknown, the investigation continues.
