Western Cape traffic authorities are assessing the weekend’s grim fatality statistics after 17 people were killed.

A number of people were also seriously injured in 10 separate accidents across the province over the weekend.

Provincial traffic spokesperson Xenophone Wentzel said 12 people were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in had a tyre blow-out in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Wellington.

Wentzel said this considerably pushed up the holiday accident death toll.

“We had 10 accidents over the weekend which resulted in 17 people being killed. Another 12 were seriously injured,” said Wentzel.

He also said the roads were busier than usual as holidaymakers returned home.
