Education Minister Naledi Pandor said claims that markers and principals were pressured to raise marks was being investigated.

Last year’s matric pass rate was down on the previous year but the education department said despite the results, more pupils passed maths and many qualified for university entry.

Pandor said allegations that markers were under pressure was being taken seriously.

“We have asked that the MEC of the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><place w:st="on"><state w:st="on">Western Cape look into this matter. He has referred it to the standing committee on education in the legislature, so that a meeting could be held at which Members of Parliament of the legislature are briefed on this and we determine what to do next."
