The accident occurred on Saturday morning on the R44 outside <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Wellington.

The canopy of the bakkie which was involved in the crash was thrown several metres away from the vehicle.

Most of the occupants, many of whom were crowded into the back of the bakkie, were killed.

<place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Tyre marks on the road indicated one of the two vehicles involved in the crash swerved into the opposite lane causing a head on collision.

Traffic authorities said it was unclear what the cause of the collision was.

One woman survived the incident and was in a critical condition while a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

More than 20 people have died on the <state w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Western Capes roads in three separate incidents in recent weeks.
