Chesley Sullenberger’s quick-thinking helped to save all 155 people on board the US Airways jet.
It was forced to pitch into the freezing Hudson River after its engines failed and an investigation into the crash was expected to get underway later.
Sullenberger’s neighbour Candace Andersen was full of praise for him.
“It was the right pilot at the right time in charge of that plane that saved so many lives."
