The latest crackdown came ahead of a crucial meeting between MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and President Robert Mugabe to try and break <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Zimbabwe</country-region>’s political deadlock.

Bindura Mayor Dumiso Wakatama and another offcial will be held in custody for two weeks. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

They were accused of making threatening calls to police officers, investigating the recent assassination attempt on airforce chief Perrance Shiri.

Defence lawyer Alec Muchadehama said there was no evidence linking the mayor to the incriminating calls or to any hit squad.

In another incident, the MDC MP for Chipinge South was arrested on Wednesday on violence allegations.

These arrests have put more pressure on the fragile power-sharing deal between the MDC and Zanu-PF.
