The Congress of the People said it was excited that former president Thabo Mbeki’s mother Epainette had thrown her weight behind the party.

Epainette Mbeki appeared at a COPE rally in the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><state w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Eastern Cape on Thursday.

Last year, the 92-year-old struggle veteran backed the move by Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa to start the new party.

Ma’Mbeki was a member of the African National Congress for more than 60 years and her husband Govan was a senior leader of the organisation.

COPE’s Sipho Ngwema said she had not officially signed her membership papers.

“She was well received by the crowd and she is going to attend a number of our rallies in this province, but what I have just confirmed with our organising people is that she has not signed yet but she has undertaken to attend all our activities leading up to Port Elizabeth."
