The African National Congress has welcomed the acquittal of National Executive Committee member and former spy boss Billy Masetlha.

Masetlha, controversial IT expert Muziwendoda Kunene and Funokwake Madlala were accused of fraud relating to the so-called hoax e-mail saga but the Commercial Crimes Court in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Pretoria found that the state had not presented any evidence of fraud.

Magistrate Dawie Jacobs said the case against them was politically-motivated which the ANC has agreed with.

The party welcomed the acquittal, saying the ruling had restored its faith in the justice system.

It also said the drama was meant to tarnish the image of the party and show division.

Prosecutors alleged that the three men created an electronic correspondence and pretended to have intercepted the emails.
