The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed on Wednesday that it had served subpoenas on several people during its continuing investigation into suspended police chief Jackie Selebi.
The admission followed a report in the Star newspaper claiming that the subpoenas were being served.
This was an attempt to get documents and videos that police were refusing to hand over.
The NPA said it would not provide the names of those who had been served but it was understood that acting commissioner Tim Williams and a number of his deputies were recipients.
It also denied suggestions that acting NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe ever ordered a review of the subpoenas as claimed in the report.
