Former president Thabo Mbeki was among a number of candidates, nominated by Gauteng’s African National Congress, for a seat in the National Assembly but the former president’s office said he would decline the nomination.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The ruling party’s provincial leadership released the list on Wednesday which would be finalised at a conference in Braamfontein this weekend.
Other well-known names included Tony Yengeni, Zwelinzima Vavi, Billy Masetlha and Blade Nzimande.
The ANC’s Nkenke Kekana said nominees had until Thursday to accept or decline the nomination.
“ANC members and leaders have been nominated on this list and we are not surprised that there would be such a nomination."
Mbeki’s spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said the former president would be spending his time on other projects.
“He would be grateful and honoured that the membership of the ANC has nominated him for a position in the national league but we would regretfully decline."
