The Western Cape Health Department said that the opening of a new trauma unit in Khayelitsha would improve the quality of health care in the area.

Health Department officials attended the opening which was made possible by an R8mn donation from a <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Rome based Italian family.

The unit was located at the Community Health Clinic in Site B.

Health MEC Marius Fransman commented that the trauma unit would serve approximately 8 000 people.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Khayelitsha community has close to one million people. Khayelitsha community has high levels of trauma especially when it relates to HIV and AIDS, TB, gunshots, knife stabs and other incidents of violence,” said the Health MEC.
