A Swellendam dairy farmer has remarked that he was facing an uncertain financial year as milk prices fell.

Farmers in the Overberg region have suffered increasing losses when heavy rains triggered floods in the region in 2008 and were now anticipating a drought.

Dairy farmer Pietman Lourens said farmers were being battered by bad weather and high running costs.

Lourens maintained that consumers as well as farmers were on the losing end of milk prices.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

“Unfortunately the milk prices have come down drastically. You people as consumers don’t pay less. We get about 40% less for our milk than we got last year, and all these kinds of things make it more difficult to farm,” said Lourens.
