The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Bloemfontein court on Monday overturned the so-called Nicholson judgement that saw the charges against Zuma being scrapped.
Trade union federation Cosatu said it remained convinced that his prosecution was politically motivated.
Cosatu’s Patrick Craven said while it respected the courts, it would continue to support the ANC leader’s appeals.
“We haven’t changed our view. We will support any further appeals that Jacob Zuma may make. We don’t basically feel that the judgement has changed the basic facts which are the ANC president will not get a fair trial given the long delays and trial by media,” said Craven.
At the same, fellow alliance partner the SACP said it also still believed the case against Zuma was a political one, while the ANC said the judgment was not a negative development as it was not a finding on its leader’s guilt or innocence.
Independent Democrat leader Patricia de Lille called on the National Prosecuting Authority to act swiftly in re-charging Zuma.
De Lille said her party respects the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“The ID hopes that the ANC and its supporters will respect the decision of the court and respect the principle of everyone being equal before the law. The NPA must now also proceed immediately with charging Jacob Zuma so he may have his day in court as soon as possible,” said de Lille.
The FF Plus also wanted Zuma’s case to now come to a head. It said the fact it was still dragging on was causing political and economic uncertainty at a time when <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">South Africa</country-region> needed stability.
