Six people were killed and two others were critically injured in an accident on the N2 outside Riviersonderend in the Western Cape.
The police’s Koos Pieterse said there were eight people in the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Toyota minibus when it crashed some 10km outside the Overberg town. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
He said they were investigating the cause of the accident, although it appeared as though a tyre burst.
Pieterse siad the identities of the victims were not known.
“Next of kin has [sic] not been notified yet… we are busy investigating a culpable homicide case. It seems to have hurt the driver at this stage and one occupant is still alive."
Meanwhile, the Western Cape’s Provincial Traffic Department confirmed that more than 100 people had died on the province’s roads since the start of the holidays.
Over the same period last year, close to 200 people were killed in road accidents.
The department’s Xenophone Wentzel said that as the holiday season drew to a close, law enforcement officers would maintain their presence on national roads.
“The holiday season is coming to an end. We expect more holidaymakers as well as people who will be travelling on public transport that will come back to the <place w:st="on"><state w:st="on">Western Cape."
