There were unconfirmed reports that the largest ship ever pirated was released by Somali buccaneers after the payment of a $3m ransom.

The Sirius Star, a Saudi super-tanker captured in November carrying two million barrels of oil, was seen moving away from the Somali coast.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Pirate spokesman told the BBC that the buccaneers had left the Sirius Star which was leaving the region where it had been held captive for nearly two months.

It was one of more than 100 ships attacked in the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><place w:st="on">Gulf of Aden last year.
