Dozens of angry buyers and stallholders gathered outside the Cape Town Market in Epping today, blockading the entrance.

They were protesting a plan to impose a levy. The latter requires buyers to pay an additional amount, in order to cover the market authority’s deposit costs.

Police arrived on the scene and then arrested one buyer, who’s been charged with intimidation.

After talks between market authorities and demonstrators, protestors declared they were unsatisfied with the outcome.

Protestors have vowed to continue similar action, until their grievances are heard. They also threatened to shut down the market itself if the levy remains in place.
