A <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Pretoria woman was in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked while cycling.

Mathilda Barnard was stabbed on Wednesday while mountain biking between Irene and the Doornkloof Mall in Centurion.

When Barnard failed to join her cycling group they became worried and began searching for her.

Her son found her on a dirt road in Irene.

Barnard had a stab wound to the neck and several other lacerations.

Family spokesperson John Williams said, “Mathilda was lying on her back, blood all over her yet she was totally unconscious at that stage."

It was understood that police had found the weapon used in the attack.

Barnard’s cellphone was stolen but her off-road bicycle and gear were left untouched.

Police were investigating the attack but no arrests were made.
