The South African Weather Service has predicted heavy rains in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><place w:st="on"><state w:st="on">Gauteng this weekend.

The 60% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday was expected to cool down sweltering heat that the province had been experiencing.

Forecaster Elke Brouwers said conditions would improve next week.

“Temperature wise, for <city w:st="on">Pretoria 16°C to 24°C, <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Johannesburg 14°C to 22°C and Vereeniging 15°C to 24°C. For Saturday cooling slightly, Pretoria 16° to 22°, Johannesburg 14°C to 21°C."

Johannesburg emergency services’ Percy Morokane said rivers, dams and low-lying bridges would be monitored.

“There is already indications that there will be flash floods which was the case in New Years Eve where we lost two people in Ivory Park, so we would like to warn the community at large that they should avoid low rising bridges."
