Residents informal settlements wait for permanent housing

The Western Cape’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has embarked on a campaign in the hope of reducing the number of fires in informal settlements.<?xml:namespace prefix="o"?>

Staff have been visiting informal settlements across the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1"?><place w:st="on">Peninsula, educating residents about safety tips.

Disaster management officials were in the Egoli informal settlement in <place w:st="on">Philippi on Friday.

Local community leader AB Fransman said the guidance was helpful.

“They showed us what to do. For example, we must collect buckets full of sand. It’s a little bit difficult but people are happy with the advice; they will be able to handle it."
