There were calls on Thursday for members of the controversial VIP Protection Unit to be held accountable after Safety Minister Nathi Mthethwa admitted that 111 officers from the unit had been charged with serious crimes, including murder and armed robbery in the last four years.
The Democratic Alliance’s Diane Kohler-Barnard said that a written reply to her parliamentary question about the unit revealed that only two of the officers, linked to criminal activity, had been dismissed.
In the latest incident, the unit’s members shot a man on the N12 highway after a collision with the president’s motorcade.
An inquest was opened into the unit’s actions.
