Suspended police chief Jackie Selebi appeared to have gone to ground on Wednesday as his future as national police commissioner hung in the balance.
All attempts by Eyewitness News to contact Selebi this week were unsuccessful.
He had pocketed around R1m since he was placed on extended leave after being charged with crimes linked to his alleged involvement with Brett Kebble murder-accused Glen Agliotti.
Meanwhile, the African National Congress welcomed Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s decision to ask President Kgalema Motlanthe to replace Selebi.
ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe said government must show the public that it was serious about fighting crime, adding that it could only do so by appointing a new permanent commissioner.
Mthetwa’s spokesperson Hangwani Mudaudzi said the minister was waiting for Motlanthe to respond to his request.
